Friendship and Some Tips

True friendship is hard to find and even harder to keep! Many people don't realize this fact, which ultimately harms their relationships. When friends clasp their two hands, five plus five, ten fingers come closer to each other. If you want to keep those fingers close forever, you must give some efforts towards the relationship. Here I would like to tell you about some genuine tips.

Guidelines For Lasting Friendship

  1. To be friend, you must be a good listener. It was Benjamin Disraeli who said, nature has given us two ears, but only one mouth. The ears cannot be closed whereas the mouth can be closed. Once a word leaves your mouth, you cannot get it back. Think twice before you speak anything. You are the master of the unspoken word; you become a slave of the spoken word. Listen not only with your ears, but with your heart.
  2. You must learn to appreciate others. Do not find fault with others in the midst of people. Leonardo da Vinci has said: "Blame in private, but praise in public."
  3. If you would be a true friend, you must grow in the sprit of forgiveness.
  4. Never forget a friend's name, because that lapse on your part can never be pardoned. That will show up your insincerity.
  5. Make promises sparingly, but when you make one, fulfil it with the least delay.
  6. You must not preach what you do not practice yourself.
  7. Be cheerful; smile as much as you can. Learn to laugh. Laughter is a good mental tonic. Don't laugh at others. You may laugh at yourself.
  8. Discuss, but do not argue. You may win an argument, but lose a friend.
  9. Do not feel hurt when friends criticize you. Whenever you find yourself in the wrong, admit it.
  10. If you want to win friends, you must be on the look out for opportunities to serve them. The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. Emerson has said: 'The only way to get a friend is to be a friend'. And Henry Davidson has said: 'Radiate friendship, and it will be returned tenfold'.

Prayer is Power

Prayer is Power
Prayer is the most powerful form of energy that one can produce. If you pray sincerely everyday you will feel a steady flow of continuous power in your daily life. Do you pray? How often do you pray?

All of us pray in different ways. Some people go to their places of worship and offer prayers, though many believe that God is present anywhere. People believe that prayer produces desired effect. This has been proved in some rare cases in the medical field where patients have been cured of diseases by the calm effort of prayer though the medical treatment had failed to produce the desired effect.

Properly understood, prayer is an activity indispensable for the fullest development of one's personality. Only in prayer we achieve that complete harmony of body, mind and spirit that gives the frail human body its unshakable strength.

How does prayer fortify us with so much dynamic power? Human beings seek to increase their limited energy by turning themselves to unlimited source of all energy. When we pray, we connect ourselves with the inexhaustible power that spins the universe. We then arise and feel morally strengthened and physically brightened up.

In order to mould our personality fully, prayer must become a regular habit. One can pray anywhere in the street, in the office, in the school or college, alone in one's room, in the church, mosque or temple. There is no prescribed posture, time or place for prayer. But it is of no use to pray in the mornings and lead a life without a sense of values for the remainder of the day. True prayer is a way of life. In fact, the 'trust' in life is literally a way of prayer.

So, go for it! Prayer will always help you in your life.

The interesting thing is that despite it's tiny size the Pepquino melon has identical external pattern and distinctive shape of traditional watermelons. Cute fruit. Isn't it?

Pepquino melon was discovered by Dutch food producers in South America who brought it to the Netherlands and cultivated it in greenhouses. While it resembles larger watermelons, it has a fresh crisp taste similar to a cucumber and juicy light green flesh. According to producer Koppert Cress, Pepquino melon can be eaten as a snack or appetiser, like the olive, in a summer salad, stir fried or made into a sorbet and teamed with dark chocolate. So, they expects this tiny fruit to become the most fashionable fruit of 2009.

1 in 4 Americans Texting While Driving

Texting while driving
One in four US drivers text while driving, even though there are bans in some states, the findings of a new survey reveals. The survey, conducted by mobile voice application company Vlingo, also found that 83 percent of the 4,800 people surveyed believed the practice should be banned.

Interestingly, sending text messages while driving is more prevalent in states where it is already banned or legislation is pending for a ban. Drivers in Tennessee were the most prolific texters, with 42 percent of those questioned admitting to the habit. A ban on using a cell phone to text while driving will go into effect in Tennessee in July. Currently texting while driving is banned only in seven US states and the capital city.

During the survey 26 percent of the respondents said they could not resist a bit of texting while driving. This is really scary. Because texting while driving increases the risk of accidents. Texting was responsible for a train crash in Los Angeles last September which killed 25 people, and a Boston trolly crash this month injured nearly 50 people.

Appetite linked to Death in Elderly People

Elderly people who report impaired appetite are more likely to die sooner compared to those who had good appetite, the findings of a new study suggests. The study, findings of which was published in the May issue of the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging, pointed that information on an elderly patient's eating habits may be important for health providers regarding risk for patient deterioration and mortality.

The study, conducted by Dr. Danit Shahar, a researcher with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's S. Daniel Abraham International Center for Health and Nutrition and Department of Epidemiology, demonstrated a link between the Daily Activity Energy Expenditure (an accurate measurement of total physical activity), appetite and mortality among well functioning community-dwelling adults.

During the study, the researchers analyzed DAEE and dietary factors, including self-reported appetite, enjoyment of eating and intake assessed by the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) of 298 older participants (ages 70-82 years) in the Health ABC study. Participants who reported improved appetite were at lower risk for mortality. Similarly, participants who reported good appetite at baseline had a low risk for mortality.

"These findings are important because they show how subjective appetite measurement can predict death, even when adjusting for health and many other variables," said Dr. Danit Shahar.

Injured Stork gets Artificial Beak

It is reported that an injured stork in Hungary recently got a new life when some experts replaced it's damaged beak with an artificial one. Take a look at the picture.

The stork damaged it's beak in an accident and was taken to the Hortobagy Birds' Hospital. After one-hour operation the experts successfully repaired the lower beak and replaced the top beak with an artificial one made out of synthetic resins. Without the artificial beak, the bird would have needed hand-feeding for the rest of its life and would have been unable to return to the wild.

Now the bird is recovering and will be released back into the wild after it fully recovers. Is it not a good example of humanity? I think wildlife activists must thank Tamas Kothay and Dr Deri Janos, who helped the injured stork by providing an artificial beak.

Cathedral Bells play John Lennon's 'Imagine'

John Lennon
Last week Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral rang out the tune of famous anti-religion song 'Imagine', as part of an arts festival. It was really odd for a cathedral to play such a song. That's why hundreds of people gathered outside the cathedral to hear John Lennon's 'Imagine'.

The original idea to play 'Imagine', which Lennon himself described the song as "anti-religious, anti-conventional", on church bells came from artist Cleo Evans. Evans was commissioned by a cultural festival called Futuresonic to develop the concept with the cathedral.

A team of seven volunteer bell ringers played the 1971 song after practising for months on hand bells. The team was led by Sam Austin, 23, a student at Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music. The bells in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral are the highest and heaviest ringing peal bells in the world.

Missed it? Watch the video to hear Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral performing John Lennon's Imagine as part of Futuresonic 2009.

Obese Heart Patients Live Longer!

Obesity is one of the major causes of heart disease. I am sure that you know it. But, now the findings of a new study suggests that obesity may actually help heart patients. What? Yes, studies have shown that obese heart patients have better survival and have fewer strokes and heart attacks than normal-weight or underweight heart patients.

According to cardiologist Carl J. Lavie, MD, of the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, "Obese patients with heart disease respond well to treatment and have paradoxically better outcomes and survival than thinner patients". But, though many studies proved that fact many cardiologists haven't heard of this or don't believe it.

Yes, obesity is harmful. And compared to lean people, overweight and obese people have a much higher incidence of heart attacks, strokes, and death from other cardiovascular causes. But when when normal or underweight people get heart disease, their prognosis is worse than obese heart patients.

Why obese people do well? Dr. Lavie thinks that excess weight may be somewhat protective because obese patients have more reserves to fight disease than thinner patients. Another explanation might be that lean heart patients have more aggressive disease because they are genetically predisposed to develop heart disease and have worse outcomes.

Dr. Lavie warned that patients with heart disease shouldn't assume that gaining weight will protect them. The findings of the study appeared in the May issue of Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Impulse Buying, Life and Relationships

Impulse buying refers to an unplanned decision to buy or a situation when the decision is made just before a purchase. An impulse buyer or impulse spender takes the decision to buy after seeing the product or a nicely done advertising campaign. It is thought that human emotions and feelings play the most important role in impulse buying.

Are you an impulse buyer? In order to know that answer the following questions truthfully:

  1. Does your spouse or partner complain that you spend too much money?
  2. Are you surprised each month when your credit card bill arrives at how much more you charged than you thought you had?
  3. Do you have more shoes and clothes in your closet than you could ever possibly wear?
  4. Do you own every new gadget before it has time to collect dust on a retailer’s shelf?
  5. Do you buy things you didn’t know you wanted until you saw them on display in a store?

If your answer was "yes" to any two of the above questions, rest assured that you are an impulse spender and indulge yourself in so-called retail therapy!

This is not a good thing. Mind it. Because impulse spending usually lead to problems such as financial difficulties, family disapproval, or feeling of guilt or disappointment. It will prevent you from saving for the important things like a house, a new car, a vacation, retirement or whatever.

If you want to live a financially stable life, you must set some solid financial goals and resist spending money on items that really don’t matter in the long run. Impulse spending will not only put a strain on your finances but your relationships, as well.

To overcome the problem of impulse spending, the first thing you need to do is learn to separate your needs from your wants. Give yourself a cooling-off period before you buy anything that you have not planned for. When you go shopping, make a list and take only enough cash to pay for what you have planned to buy. Leave your credit cards at home.

And if you see something that you think you really need, don't buy it instantly. Instead give yourself a few days to decide if it is really something you need or something you can easily do without. In this way, by taking some careful steps while shopping, you will be able to easily mend your financial fences and your relationships.

US Soldier Fights in Pink Underpants!

Recently an US soldier battled against the militants wearing his pink "I love New York" underwear. Take a look at the picture. No, this is not a Photoshop stuff. This is real and it appeared on the front page of The New York Times.

Zachary Boyd, the 19-year-old soldier, was sleeping when his platoon came under a sudden attack by militants in Afghanistan. Before standing against the enemy, Boyd managed to grab his helmet and body armour only. So, an Associated Press photographer got the chance to capture the rare moment - a soldier battling the enemy in his underwear!

That was definitely a funny situation. But in my view the soldier did his duty perfectly. What you say?

World's Oldest Dog is 21 Year Old

The world's living oldest dog is a dachshund called Chanel. On Wednesday Chanel celebrated her 21st birthday with a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records. The rescue dog from Port Jefferson in New York also visited a dog hotel and spa to celebrate her birthday!

Chanel became the world's oldest dog after the previous record holder Butch died in 2003. Butch was 28 years old. A spokewoman from the Guinness Book of Records awarded Chanel the official certificate after reviewing a veterinarian's certificate, statements from four witnesses and photographs of Chanel.

Chanel's owners Denice Shaughnessy and Karl Shaugnessey said that they adopted the dachshund from a dog shelter in Virginia when she was a six-week-old puppy. Point to note that 21 years is equivalent to the age of 147 in dog years.

Compulsory Smoking in China!

When governments of many countries are implementing bans on smoking, local government officials in a Chinese province is ordering people to smoke more cigarettes. Why? Because smoking more cigarettes of the local brand will boost the local economy via money earned from cigarette tax!

According to news reports, officials in Hubei province in Central China ordered the government officials to smoke nearly a quarter of a million packs of cigarettes. The move is aimed at boosting tax revenues and protecting local manufacturers from outside competition during the global financial crisis.

In total, government officials have been ordered to smoke 230,000 packs of Hubei-branded cigarettes worth £400,000. Even teachers in local schools are asked to smoke cigarettes and meet the issued quota. The government order also comes with a threat to fine officials who fail to meet their targets or are caught smoking cigarettes manufactured by rival brands in neighboring provinces.

Mind-controlled Wheelchair

Imagine about a motorized wheelchair that a completely paralyzed person could control simply by thinking about it. Such wheelchair will transform the way people with severe disabilities spend their life. No this is not just an imagination. Scientists at University of Zaragoza, Spain, have actually developed such a thought-controlled wheelchair.

The thought-controlled wheelchair has a laser sensor and a screen that displays a real-time, three-dimensional virtual reconstruction of the wheelchair's surroundings. The individual thinks of a particular word and a sensor collar around the user's neck detects the electrical signals sent from their brain to the larynx muscles. To steer the chair, a user concentrates on the part of the display where he or she wants to go, and electrodes in a skullcap detect the user's brain activity and work out the destination, the researchers said.

Volunteers took just 45 minutes to learn how to use a prototype chair safely and accurately, said University of Zaragoza associate professor Javier Minguez. The wheelchair prototype can handle only two thought commands a minute and can be used for only about two hours since the wet gel used to fix the electrodes to a user's head dries and loses its effectiveness.

But Dr Minguez hopes that a faster and more sophisticated version of the mind-controlled wheelchair could be developed and soon will be released for commercial production. So, for the arrival of the amazing wheelchair we will have to wait some more years.
